Ostriches
A new test developed by Unistel Medical Laboratories makes it possible to provide DNA profiles for individual ostriches. These results facilitate the identification of individual birds, but also the accurate breeding of chicks. This knowledge may help a beeder to make accurate selection decisions and identify specific lines for improved meat production and feather quality. Knowledge on the specific family trees also helps to decrease inbreeding and make breeding more effective. DNA profile analysis makes it possible to combat theft of birds by matching birds to parents of meat to a specific individual. DNA profile analysis has also been used to match specific feathers to specific birds.
Sample requirements:
DNA can be extracted from blood, meat and feather shafts of freshly plucked feathers.
Blood samples should be taken in an EDTA tube (Lavender top). Transport is at room temperature with no specific requirements.
